Qwikster over before it began; Netflix no longer splitting services

Posted on 10 October 2011 by Bethany Smith

Netflix is no longer pursuing a sub-company for separate DVD services from its streaming services. Qwikster has already been abandoned (Yay!!!).

After a year of some major customer disappointments (price hikes, split services, terrible rebranding) it looks like Netflix is finally listening to its customers (or at least to the falling stock prices).

In Monday’s blog, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings stated that two websites would make things more difficult and Netflix would remain a one stop shop for DVDs and streaming. Hastings also says that they are done with price changes.

Is this announcement enough to save Netflix users from flocking to competitors or has the damage already been done?

Steve Jobs: 1955-2011

Posted on 07 October 2011 by Nathan

Steve Jobs, the visionary founder and former-CEO of Apple has passed away. I know that you are probably thinking, “Do I really need to read another post about his death?” But I am not so much interested in his death as I am in his life. As I type on my MacBook Pro, while listening to music from my iPod with my iPhone at arms-length, I can’t help but feel that Steve has impacted my life (yes, I’m a fanboy). Remembering Steve Jobs

The thing that made Steve so interesting was the extremes in his life. He was so public at Apple press conferences, but guarded his private life well. He was applauded for his hands-off approach toward filmmakers working at Pixar (a company that he purchased after he was ousted from Apple in the mid-80′s), yet he seemed almost tyrannical in his handling of all things Apple. He was a practicing Buddhist and searched for spiritual enlightenment, but was also one to hold a grudge (my personal favorite being the one with Dell that started when he said that they sold un-innovative beige boxes.) In other words, Steve was a person, just like you and I.

Steve founded Apple, NeXT (a company that laid the groundwork for many software developments that would be later implemented in Apple’s OS X operation system), purchased the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm, spun it off into Pixar and then merged it into Disney, and became the “House of Mouse’s” largest shareholder.

While his legacy will be primarily tied to the personal computer it shouldn’t be forgotten that he has changed the software, film, phone, tablet (perhaps created this one), and camera (the iPhone 4 is the most popular device whose pictures are uploaded to photo blogs) industries in the process.

He will be dearly missed.

District 13 hacks Panem’s Capitol in Hunger Games movie viral marketing stunt?

Posted on 03 October 2011 by Bethany Smith

TheCapitol.pn, a site set up as a special promotion for the upcoming “The Hunger Games” movie, has picked up its activity over the last few days, but Sunday’s activity left a few fans scratching their heads. Is it possible this unusual activity on the Panem site was an act of rebellion from the supposedly eradicated District 13?

This past weekend, TheCapitol.pn began processing passes for Districts 12, 7 and 8. The site also added a countdown to the film among its other updated features. All this is normal character for the Capitol, but Sunday, all this disappeared and the usual Capitol seal was replaced with a block of Latin.

Capitol hacked - the hunger games

This mysterious block of Latin was quickly discovered to be Juvenal’s “Satire X.” Juvenal wrote this to display his contempt of “declining heroism” and Roman politicians that resorted “panem et circenses” — “bread and circuses” — as the easiest way to rise to power. This idea of “panem et circenses” is a major theme of “The Hunger Games’ book and where the nation of Panem gets its name, but it isn’t a concept the Capitol probably wants to spread around. This Latin takeover seems to be an act of rebellion — District 13? Viral marketing?

The only response from the Capitol has been this tweet: “Citizens of Panem: Those who cannot remember the past are condemned.”

http://twitter.com/#!/TheCapitolPN/status/120596580687556608

The site has since been returned to normal, but one thing’s for sure…it’s probably a good idea to keep an eye on thecapitol.pn to see what else is in store for “The Hunger Games” fans.

“D” Is For “Deux” to DC Comics: The New 52

Posted on 19 September 2011 by AJ

Gadzooks! There is a shake up in the world of comics –DC Comics that is. The Warner Bros. subsidiary and comics giant revamped 52 of their premiere graphic novel series late August. All-time favorites: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the Justice League are all getting makeovers, all the way back to issue.#1.

DC Comics hopes that the “do-over” will invite new comic readers to jump on the crime fighting fantasy bandwagon and boost staggering sales the company has seen in recent years. DC Co-publisher, Jim Lee, explained that the reissue would also allow DC creatives to explore new story-lines and short-lived ones, as well as look into new aesthetics, and development. The idea is to make it easier for Sci-Fi fans to pick up any issue, start reading, and not have to worry about back-tracking on an ambiguous back-story.

Never fear though, the revamp does not entail a total makeover. Small adjustments to the superheroes’ aesthetics and character, such as Wonder Woman’s do-away with the vintage jeggings to the scantily clad shorts, or Superman’s intrinsic change from the All-American go-getter to a slightly despond personality, will be noticeable to long time comic book fans –allowing for fans to have a little bit more of a connection with their favorite do-gooders.

Another revision to the DC classic series is the patchwork of lost detail found in it’s preceding issues. Writers will go more in depth with character storylines and grant readers more insight into their superhero’s [or super villain’s] development over the course of a few issues, rather than illustrating such complex storylines through a few story panels. In the first issue of the Justice League, readers will find the initial meeting between the Green Lantern and Batman surprisingly uncongenial. The two heroes clash because of their strikingly opposite personalities: a sententious loner -the Dark Knight, put against an egotist -the Green Lantern.
Does the great comic book reissue do itself ‘justice’ and warrant an increase in comic book readership, or will it lose it’s fan base, as well as it’s goal of gaining new readers?
DC claims to have it covered. Aside from the traditional publishing of comic books, DC Comics is aiming to make it’s “new” series more accessible via digital platform. Anticipating readers can purchase their newly released issue on digital tablets, enhancing their graphic novel reading experience to a new a level. Readers with tablets and computers can enjoy seeing their favorite hero or heroine on color saturated, illuminated screens. Price point of the DC’s basic comic book will be kept at a reasonable $2.99 –another part of how DC plans to gain readers.

Whatever the case may be, our favorite graphic novel heroes will always be there –whether in print or in digital – it’s all in a matter of keeping up with them on the story of their lives.

Sony announces new installments in “Resistance” and “Uncharted” franchises

Posted on 26 August 2011 by Nathan

Sony Computer Entertainment has just announced third installments of two of their most popular franchises, “Resistance” and “Uncharted.”

The “Resistance” series takes place in an alternate history where an alien race, The Chimera, has invaded Earth and infected 90 percent of humanity. “Resistance 3″ takes place after the Chimera have taken over the U.S. and driven all survivors into hiding. We follow Joseph Capelli as he journeys from Oklahoma to New York in search of a cure. The third installment will feature a similar weapons system with a few tweaks that will allow for even more player customization and a few new enemies that will make you thankful for the new firearms. There will be 5 different multi-player modes available and the game will support up to 16 players battling head-to-head or a cooperative mode that will allow two players to face the story mode together. The game will be 3-D and Move compatible, and will be available in a limited edition that comes with the Playstation Move Sharp Shooter, a gun attachment that works with the Move controllers.

If battling aliens is not your bag, perhaps “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception” is more up your alley. “Uncharted” tells the tale of Nathan Drake, an Indiana Jones-esque treasure hunter with less noble intentions. “Drake’s Deception” follows the treasure hunter, a descendant of Sir Francis Drake, as he travels with his mentor in search of the legendary lost city, Iram of the Pillars. The third game brings co-op mode, the first of the series, and returns its popular multiplayer modes. “Drake’s Deception” will be playable in 3-D, assuming you have the capable equipment.

“Resistance 3″ will be available on September 6, and “Uncharted 3″ will be available on November 1. Both games will be $59.99 and special editions will range in price from $99.99 to $149.99.

Sony PlayStation to Release 3-D Gaming Display

Posted on 19 August 2011 by Nathan

Are you a gamer? Do you enjoy multiplayer gaming, but hate that it cuts your screen in half (not to mention that your friends are all screen-peeking cheaters)?

Sony has announced a new monitor that allows two people to play simultaneously without giving up screen space. The new 24” LCD display from the electronics giant also has all of the features that you would expect from a display in 2011: 1080p, LED edge-lighting, 240Hz refresh rate and 3-D capabilities.

A traditional 3-D monitor uses glasses that sync to the television and control which eye sees a picture. The left frame receives an image from the monitor while the right frame is darkened; then the next frame is sent to the right frame while the left frame is darkened. This method also works for multiplayer gaming.

Via Sony PlayStation

The display, while it still has this functionality, will also allow you to press a button on the glasses to turn both frames of the first player’s glasses to be “left” and both frames of the second player’s to be “right.” With the monitor’s fast refresh rate the players will still be able to see their game smoothly.

The monitor, available this fall for $499.99, comes with an HDMI cable, one pair of 3-D glasses and a copy of the yet-to-be-released Resistance 3. Gamers can purchase extra pairs of glasses separately for $69.99.

Check out Sony’s PlayStation blog for more info.
