Big news: Joss Whedon’s 2008 web musical extravaganza, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” is coming to network TV. That’s right, you’ll be able to watch the quirky online hit from a bigger screen than your computer monitor. The CW will air the show Tuesday, October 9, at 9/8 CDT.

“Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” is the musical adventure of a scientist super villain that’s frequently foiled in his plots to win over his love interest by a superhero. It’s ridiculous and fun and if you loved Whedon’s humor in “Buffy” and “The Avengers,” then you’ll like this.

While you can watch this gem online, we’re still pretty excited about it finding a much deserved wider audience. Now, the only thing that would make us happier would be news about the sequel.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Taubman Centers announced a year-long partnership to create unique shopping experience with Fox Movie Mall virtual storefronts. Along with the Fox Movie Mall app available at the iTunes Store and Android Market, shoppers at participating Tubman shopping centers (see below) can simply Stop, Scan and Shop. By picking a film title from a wallscape , consumers can scan a QR code and instantly be taken online to buy and have shipped right to their door.Using the app can save consumers up to 50 percent on their purchases and give access to the RIO coloring app, additional games, trailers, movie and TV clips and more.

The year-long exclusive partnership will also include home entertainment lounges in central locations with state-of-the-art HDTVs showcasing footage from the upcoming Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked  Blu-ray™ along with many other family films.

Doctor Who is nearing its 50th anniversary and in its run since 1963, there have been lots of adventures, lots of episodes and lots of footage. Youtuber BabelColour has gone through all this Doctor Who footage and put together an amazing catalog of “every Doctor Who adventure from ‘An Unearthly Child’ in 1963 right up to ‘The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe’ {2011} Christmas Special.”

Even though there are 106 episodes still missing from the BBC archives, BabelColour still represented those missing episodes by way of stills or reconstructions. BabelColour goes into greater detail about handcoloring footage and other decisions that helped make this video extra spectacular.

The video also splices together Doctor Who quotes and features music from the Eurhythmics.

Ok, so it isn’t so much Ferris Bueller that has returned in this Honda CR-V commercial. But Matthew Broderick’s day off from the studio life parallels his famous character very closely in this car commercial. In fact, Honda hid over two dozen references to the film, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” in this commercial. Can you find them?

The commercial is set to air during the Superbowl, but you can watch the full thing on YouTube now. What do you think of this twist on this 80′s classic?

It looks like car companies have a bit of a homage theme competition going in their Superbowl commercials. Acura just released a commercial featuring Jerry Seinfeld and the Soup Nazi.

Film Review: 

“Real Steel” is a movie that surprised me a little bit. When I first saw the trailers, I must admit that I wasn’t particularly keen on seeing it, but when I saw it in theaters I was pleasantly surprised. The movie still has some slight narrative quirks and doesn’t always know what it wants to be, but it is a pretty good movie with some very interesting robot effects. This would be a great movie for the whole family.

Video and Audio Quality:

I saw no major image issues with the picture, and the audio was very good. The picture is rich with detail and texture especially noticeable in the robots, and the sound keeps up with the action during fight sequences extremely well.

4.5/5 Stars

Special Features:

“Real Steel” Second Screen: Ringside with Director Shawn Levy: This is a really cool special feature that allows you to link your iPad (or laptop) to your Blu-Ray player. It will push additional content to your iPad while the movie plays with a director’s commentary. Every once in a while the movie will pause and give you a behind-the-scenes look at various things in the movie like the truck or the robots. I highly recommend watching this, especially if you have an iPad.

Deleted and Extended Scenes: There are a number of interesting scenes here and I like that they had the director introduce each scene and explain why it was cut.

Making of Metal Valley: This is a 14-minute behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie’s most elaborate scene. It is very interesting as they do a good job of showing you what exactly goes in to making a movie (4 days of work turns in to 15 seconds on the screen). A must-watch.

Building the Bots: A brief, and not particularly thorough look at how they made the robots for the movie. I was a little bit disappointed in this because I really liked the robot design in the movie and wish they would have gone in to a little bit more detail about how they made things.

Sugar Ray Leonard: Cornerman’s Champ: This was a short, but interesting special feature about the former boxing champion’s influence on the movie.

Countdown to the Fight: The Charlie Kenton Story: This is a fake ESPN style feature about Hugh Jackman’s character. It just comes off a little bit corny.

Most of the special features are short or not very interesting, but the Second Screen mode is really excellent. My only complaint would be that the behind-the-scenes features cut into the Second Screen mode are not playable on their own.

If you are a fan of “Real Steel” this is an excellent Blu-Ray to own. Fun for the whole family.

Let’s face it…The Doctor Who theme song is boss. You can try to say otherwise, but you’d be wrong (and the Daleks might hunt you down for your inferior theme song appreciation). 

All the whirring, and then the epic ooo–ee-ooohs. So simple, yet it says so much. There have been countless tributes to it from a video that showcases the theme through the ages & another that covers it with a didgeridoo and a cello. But perhaps the coolest tribute to the theme song is Radiophonatron.

Radiophonatron is a BBC site that created buttons out of different sounds that went into the Classic Doctor Who themes. With a simple roll-over these buttons, you can create your own Whovian tune.

In the social-tech age we live in today, its common for all of us who live socially connected have garnered the titles, badges and stickers via “checking in”. We check into venues,  TV shows, music and movies using Apps and services like GetGlue and FourSquare. Sure these all play to our vanity or knack of collect things, but what are we actually getting back?

Viggle is a rewards-based loyalty program for television allows for users to check into TV shows to get real world rewards like  gift cards, movie tickets and music.

Users will gain points by checking into the shows they watch(even news shows) and will be able to redeem their points for real rewards with companies like Fandango, Hulu Plus, Burger King and Sephora. Users will also be able to covert their points and turn them into charitable donations.

Viggle will automatically work with more than 100 channels and they are also collaborating with several networks and production companies to create show-specific engagements. They will posses the ability to engage viewers with content, polls and quizzes in real-time and reward them for their loyalty.

The App will of course come complete with syncing up with both Facebook and Twitter so that viewers may engage in conversation.

Though this service is not live yet, they are only taking requests for invites on their website. According to a press release today, the company announced that this service would be available  for download soon (and for free) in the iTunes App Store for all iOs devices. Versions for iPad, Android and Web will become available shortly after.

Midcoast Station listens to a lot of music and 2011 had lots of great hits to cover our every mood and diverse loves of genres.

Synth heavy electro pop acts like M83, Charli XCX, Neon Indian and The Wombats got us dancing. We fell in love with the beautiful sounds of folksy acts like Typhoon, The Civil Wars, Lindi Ortega, etc. We found some guilty pleasures in pop rock with Hot Chelle Rae. We loved the mad rhymes and beats of rap and hip hop groups such as Childish Gambino and Gym Class Heroes.
